Ceremony Marking 100th Anniversary of Chinese Exclusion Act

A ceremony is held in the Senate Chamber to mark the 100th anniversary of the enactment of the Chinese Immigration Act, commonly known as the Chinese Exclusion Act. Introduced on July 1, 1923, the policy restricted Chinese immigration to Canada through a narrow definition of acceptable immigrants arriving from that country.
The Act was repealed on May 14, 1947. Governor General Mary Simon, Senators Yuen Pau Woo and Victor Oh, and Trade Minister Mary Ng are among those delivering remarks at the ceremony. (June 23, 2023)
